HIM & HER
For the past couple of days, he had been a little off. He wasn’t his usual self, and something was clearly bothering him. Sleep had been a struggle, and as his partner, she never failed to notice even the slightest change in him.
That morning, he sat at the breakfast table, barely speaking. As usual, she walked up to him, gently held his ear, and kissed his neck. He kissed her forehead in return, but something felt different. She could sense it.
They left for work together, and as he drove, he attended calls, immersed in work. She sat beside him, watching him with concern, feeling helpless for not being able to ease his burden. When they reached her office, he pulled over, leaned in, and kissed her forehead. "I love you," he said, promising to call her later. She smiled, replying, "I love you too. Have lunch on time. See you in the evening." He waved goodbye and drove off, answering yet another call.
At the office, he was swamped with back-to-back meetings and calls. By noon, he finally stepped out of a meeting and called her. "What are you doing?" he asked. "Just working while having coffee," she replied. "Okay," he said, before hanging up. He simply wanted to check on her.
By 4 PM, he called again, his voice lower than usual. This time, she grew worried. "Is everything okay?" she asked. There was a brief pause before he answered, "Yes." Sensing his exhaustion, she suggested, "Let’s go home early today?" He agreed without hesitation, "Yes, sure. I’m too tired."
She requested an early leave, took a cab home, and on the way, picked up his favorite fruits, chocolates, and a small model of a superbike—something she knew he loved. Once home, she prepared everything quickly. An hour later, the doorbell rang. She opened the door to find him standing there, looking drained and worn out. She welcomed him in, kissed his forehead, and ran her fingers through his hair. "Go freshen up," she said softly.
He went straight to the bedroom, changed into comfortable clothes, and returned to the living room. She was in the kitchen, humming a tune while chopping fruits. "Just relax, I’ll be there in a minute," she called out. His phone kept buzzing, but he muted it and put it away, deciding to ignore work for the night.
She soon came out with a plate full of fruits, setting it in front of him. He leaned back on the couch, watching her, admiring how effortlessly beautiful she looked wearing his shirt. As she turned to leave, she suddenly said, "Wait, I have a surprise for you." Tying her hair into a bun, she disappeared into the room and returned with the superbike model.
His face lit up like a child’s at the sight of it. She sat next to him, and they began eating the fruits. "Where’s your phone?" she asked playfully. "It’s on mute, over there," he replied with a small smile. Pleased, she spread her arms, offering a hug. He hesitated for a moment, then instead, he slid down and rested his head on her stomach. She ran her fingers through his hair, gently caressing his forehead.
"Thank you for the gift," he murmured. She smiled and asked, "Is it work? Is something bothering you?"
He sighed and finally opened up, explaining everything that had been weighing him down. As he spoke, she listened attentively, playing with his fingers, brushing her hand over his chest, and occasionally running her fingers through his beard. When he finished, she suddenly remembered the chocolates in the fridge. She got up to get them, but he pulled her back into a tight embrace. "Stay," he whispered.
She laughed softly. "At least adjust a little, you're heavy," she teased. He adjusted slightly, and within seconds, he drifted off to sleep, snoring lightly. She smiled, rubbing his back, planting soft kisses on his forehead and shoulders. Letting him rest, she turned on the TV at a low volume, continuing to hold him as he slept.
About half an hour later, he stirred awake. "Sorry for falling asleep," he muttered. She just smiled, knowing this was exactly the escape he needed. He got up, splashed water on his face, and walked into the kitchen to make coffee. She followed, sitting next to him on the counter, chatting about her day at work.
As they sipped coffee from the same mug, he thanked her once again. She pulled him closer and said, "I knew you were off these past few days, but I didn’t want to push you to talk. I knew you’d handle it in your own way—I just wanted to make you feel at home. When I’m overwhelmed, I call you, cry, shout—but you boys handle everything silently. I felt bad for you, but I also wanted to give you space. Now that you’re here, I just want to bring you peace and calm. I’m so proud of you, my big man. The way you manage everything, even today—stepping out of your meeting just to check on me like you always do. You have no idea how proud I am of you."
There was silence. He took a deep breath and pulled her into a long, tight hug. Then, without warning, he lifted her in his arms and carried her back to the couch. Sitting down, he picked up his phone and applied for two days of leave. "I want to spend them with you," he said. She smiled and did the same.
For the first time in last few days, he felt lighter, at peace—at home.
